Fast forward a couple of hundred years. South Carolina is home to a thriving rock, and hip hop scene. It's also credited as being the spot where African American Spirituals (the foundation of R&B and then Rock) first entered our country's conscience. But the genre South Carolina is best known for is ...wait for it.... Beach music. You read that right. Not Cali, not Florida. South Carolina. "Beach" music, not to be confused with Surf, Calypso, or whatever Jimmy Buffet plays, is an offshoot of early R&B and rock'n roll that featured a shuffling beat which spawned a dance called The Shag. Try visiting Memphis, TN and avoiding Elvis. I'll spare you some time & money... it's not going to happen. Ever since The King moved to Memphis (he was born in Tupelo, MS), the town has been synonymous with his work. Don't get us wrong, there are plenty of other great music must-dos in Memphis, but we'll save those for another post. This is all about Elvis.

Of course, I have to mention Elvis' home, Graceland. To see it while in Memphis goes without saying. Still, there are a myriad of sites that will tell you more, and if you're reading this page, you already know about it. But I'm continually surprised by those who don't know about the other Elvis related sites, such as restaurants, and hotels in the area. There is even an "Elvis Week" long festival every August.

Did you know you can eat like Elvis? Yep. Restaurants like the Rock-n-Roll cafe will serve up Elvis' infamous banana and peanut butter sandwich to your liking. It'll cost you around $9. My insiders tell me, that another local haunt, The Arcade, will make the same sandwich for less than a King's ransom, but you won't find it on the menu. It's a secret item that you'll have to ask for.

When you're finished there, walk off your sandwich (if you've actually managed to finish it!) at Elvis' auto row to check out his many cars, and of course the Lisa Marie private jet in all it's tacky glory. When you're finished for the day, head back to your room at the Heartbreak Hotel, where you can check into your own private Elvis-themed room, such as the Jungle Room, the Billiards Room, or a room inspired by Elvis' real (and famously off-limits) room upstairs at Graceland....http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11142626.post-67790223390354040422010-12-28T14:34:00.002-05:002011-10-20T17:24:34.552-04:00Georgia on my MindHey music lovers-

If you find yourself in The Peach State, don't forget to check out the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. You'll find it in Macon, Georgia, about an hour and a half outside of Atlanta. Why Macon? Good question! While Atlanta may currently be a modern mecca for hip hop and r&b, Macon is where stars like James Brown, Otis Redding, Little Richard, and the Allman Brothers Band began....http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11142626.post-53319884536688395412010-05-21T16:03:00.006-04:002011-10-20T17:25:49.015-04:00I'm Goin' to Jackson

The song "Jackson," made famous by Johnny Cash & June Carter never says whether or not they are referring to Jackson, Mississippi or Jackson, Tennessee, but ask anyone from Mississippi, and they'll claim the song as their own. Why? Because Jackson, MS also calls itself the Birthplace of America's Music, and they certainly have a right to claim it too. Dozens of musicians were born in Mississippi, many of whom got their musical start in Jackson. Today, live music can be heard throughout the city. Top venues include Martins, WC Dons, and Hal & Mal's. Gospel, Country, Blue, Rock: they all have a foundation in Mississippi, and as Jackson is the largest city in the state (and the state capitol), you're sure to find some here.

You'll also find the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame. Admission is free, and the museum itself is located inside the Jackson International Airport. If your plans don't lead you in this direction, or you need to skip the airport, the Hall of Fame's website is a wealth of information, and they offer a Mississippi Blues Map in their online store.

Following is a list of musicians (of varying genres) born in the state of Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame.
No one knows for sure, but one can get close.

The most likely area would be the source of the blues in 1920s America, Dockery Plantation. Dockery Plantation's owner allowed employees at his mill to play guitars imported from Mexico during breaks. Among the first crop of musicians: Henry Sloan, Willie Brown, Tommy Johnson, and Eddie "Son" House, and later Howlin’ Wolf and Robert Johnson.

The plantation was located along the Sunflower River on what is now MS Highway 8 between Cleveland, and Ruleville. The attached picture shows one of a few crossroads along that stretch of highway, and is very likely to have been a road Johnson would have traveled.

TIP

If your journey leads you to search for the infamous crossroads, be sure not to miss the Mississippi Blues Trail that notes markers along the route from deep in the Delta region all the way up to Memphis, TN.

If traveling by air, Memphis will afford you the most travel options, as it is the largest city in this region. See also our tips for traveling to and around Memphis on your music tour.
You get it, right? “Mo(tor) Town. As in Henry Ford. You’d be surprised who doesn’t realize that. Anyway, any music lover absolutely must see The Motor City at least once. The MoTown sound started here, but the city is also home to lots of Gospel (and its Hall of Fame). And let’s not forget KISS wrote their classic Detroit Rock City for this town too.

More recently, Detroit is the birthplace of techno. In the late 1980s, artists Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins created this electronic sound. Seems fitting for a place so rife with engineering. Here are a few tips to get you about on your trip through Detroit.
Your first stop must be- has to be the Motown Museum. Period.

Next, consider seeing the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Did you know it was here? Well, it is.
And don’t think about missing one of my favorite museums anywhere (and I live in Washington DC- home of the Smithsonian): the Henry Ford Museum. This private collection offers a lot for the music enthusiast. You’re likely to spot a revolutionary war drum (like the one in the famous portrait to the right). Other collections include some of Edison’s earliest recording devices, which would later record and immortalize music. At one point, the museum also hosted over a dozen cars belonging to rock starts (i.e. John Lennon, and Elvis Presley). Be sure to call the museum to see if these music items (and others) are on display.
Suggested Stays:
The Motorcity Casino.
The Leiland Hotel (home to the City Club- the city’s Industrial Music nightclub.
Then what would you say if I told you that you (yes, you) could stay in the home of a bonafide world-class musician? Well, now you can... for a price, of course.

More and more celebrities of all types are renting out their vacation homes when they are aren't being used, and that goes for celebrities of the musical variety too. Here are a few to consider for your next getaway.

Mick Jagger's home in Mustique has been for rent since the rock star purchased it in 2006. Price upon request. You might even run into Mick's neighbor, Davud Bowie who has a home (not for rent) there.

For a mere $51,000 per night you can sleep at Sir Richard Branson's Necker Island. In case you didn't know, Sir Richard started Virgin Records. And Virgin Air. And Virgin Mobile. And the forthcoming Virgin Galactic. Anyway, you'll have 74 acres, a full staff and room for 27 of your best friends. And if you have no friends, surely renting this abode will get you some.

If Branson's Necker Island is too much to bear, try Keith Richard's pad in nearby Turks & Caicos. This beachfront number will cost you a "reasonable" $8107 per night. By comparison, that's chump change.

Meanwhile, Eric Clapton is offering his Standfast Point home for rent in Antigua. This one is my personal favorite. Rates (at the time of this post) went for $50,000 per week. Details on this estate can be found here.

Prefer your music stars to be in the country world? Then try Randy Travis' two Hawaiian estates. His larger Lahaina Estate, will run you $1250 per night, while the more modest digs will cost $450. Both properties are on Maui.

And that's how they roll.

The Summer of Love may have been more than thirty years ago, but the peace, love and rock and roll attitude that put her on the musical map is alive and well in the City by the Bay. San Francisco is home to one of the most eclectic, unique, and non-commercial places to find unique contemporary music. If it is variety you seek, San Francisco is the right place.

“Anything goes” is still the order of the day here, especially when San Franciscan’s seek out entertainment. Not only Rock enthusiasts, but also those seeking rock’s roots- namely jazz, the blues; and the contemporary hybrids techno, Asian hip hop will find something here.

Home to millionaires, celebrities and the birthplace of every other do-com, San Francisco remains one of the most expensive cities in the United States. So if budget is a concern, keep this in mind while planning your trip.
The Phoenix Hotel
www.phoenixhotel.com
601 Eddy St
San Francisco, CA 94109
(415) 776-1380
Long known as the choice of rock stars, The Phoenix Hotel is by far the most likely place to spot bands playing the area’s nightspots. The hotel architecture is indicative of the mid-century motel; a two story building with wrap-around balconies overlooking a courtyard complete with kidney bean shaped swimming pool. The staff is very polite, but don’t try to get them to cop to what name-talent are guests. You’d just as soon get a response out of Buckingham Palace Guard. In fact, the best attempts to find out who might be currently registered at the hotel will not yield a result. You’ll just tick them off. Instead of trying to find out who is staying at The Phoenix, just relax by the pool, or at The Whisky Bar, (or is it Back Flip?) knowing that stars such as Anthony Kiedis, David Bowie and Sinead O’Connor have been where you are now. The Phoenix Hotel is located in the city’s urban center, The Tenderloin. As this is not the safest part of the city, be mindful when stepping out into the surrounding neighborhood.
The Hotel Triton
ww.hoteltriton.com
342 Grant Ave
San Francisco, CA 94108
(415) 394-0500
Adjacent to San Francisco’s world-famous landmark Chinatown gates, you will find the Hotel Triton. Here, music lovers have the opportunity to rent a room furnished by a San Francisco rock star. The idea was conceived years ago by hotel staff who enlisted the help of notable music personalities such as Carlos Santana, as well as stay in the Jerry Garcia inspired room. (call the hotel). Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers have already put their personal stamp on rooms of their own.
San Francisco, CA 94102
For those seeking the inspiration of a top musician, but the accoutrement of a four-star hotel, the Hotel Monaco is the perfect choice. Here one can rent the Grace Slick Hotel Suite, inspired and designed by the former Jefferson Airplane/Starship front woman herself.
San Francisco, CA 94133
While the Beat Generation wrote lyrics of the non-musical variety, it’s virtually impossible to ignore its direct influence on Rock n Roll. Lou Reed, Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, The Beatles and so many more musicians have called the Beat Movement a source of rebellious inspiration. Rumor even has it that John Lennon added the ‘a’ to the spelling of his band’s name as homage to his idol Jack Kerouac.

With that inspiration in mind, we offer The Hotel Boheme, a truly unique Beat-inspired hotel in the heart of San Francisco’s North Beach district. This quaint 15-room inn was a popular spot with Alan Ginsberg. Its also a few doors down from the historic Beat hangout, Vesuvio.
For those looking to satisfy the quintessential San Francisco rock and roll experience, we suggest the Red Victorian Bed, Breakfast & Art B&B. This centrally located Bed and breakfast is not far from the epicenter of hippy culture- Haight Ashbury. Each room is treated with a hippie vibe. Tie die optional.
There’s absolutely nothing kitschy about The Clift. Once the Four Seasons, this upscale hotel with a minimalist lobby is beautiful to say the least. Owned by former Studio 54 honcho Ian Schrader, the hotel is the choice for many celebrities, and musicians alike. The Clift is perhaps best known for its popular lounge, the Redwood Room, which is a celebrity in itself. Upon first glance, the Redwood Room is a sight. Dark Cherry walls create an immediate warmth to the otherwise vacuous room. What appear to be portraits lining the walls are actually LCD screens broadcasting slowly moving images that tell a series of stories.

Originally built in 1915, the Clift has well appointed rooms are a hallmark of The Clift, with child amenities such as Nintendo, cookies and milk and prepubescent bath robes.
Mel’s Diner
For the baby boomer rock lover, Mel’s Drive in will conger up memories of high school, soda jerks serving vanillas malts and teenagers hanging out in a booth. Nothing has changed at mel’s Doner, the inspiration for George Lucas’s “American Graffiniti”. The popular chain dried up in the 60s and 70s, making a huge comeback when the movie opened, Today, visitors can enjoy a simply menu at reasonable prices, commensurate to today’s inflation. . And did we mention the individual jukeboxes at each booth?

Sushi Groove
If you’re looking for a hipper than hip, sushi joint, this is definitely it. The food is great- the DJ is amazing too. Young beautiful, and edgy San Franciscans crowd the tiny space on weekends. If you're bringing mom and dad, or like it a bit sedate yourself, with come early, or skip it altogether.

Ace Wasabi's Rock-n-Roll Sushi:
Ace's is very much like Sushi Groove, except this is the place I might bring the folks. Its a bit less of everything than Sushi Groove: less crowded, less noise, and in some opinions (not mine BTW), less tasty. The pluses? Its location is not as scary as Sushi Groove can be (South of Market in an old warehouse), but in the Marina, so your mom won't be clutching her purse and looking over her shoulder as you walk from the car to the restaurant! Oh yes, and beautiful people are found dining here too- just fewer piercings!
Hi, got any feedback on the Club Med in Punta Cana? I have heard that the childrens [sic] clubs are great but the food isn't brilliant and it is expensive. We like the fact that it is a relatively short flight from BWI. Any advice would be appreciated or if you have any other ideas for family vacation resorts requiring only 1 flight.
Many Thanks, Lucy

Hi Lucy,

While Punta Cana is still on my "must go" list, I'm getting great feedback from families (and personal friends) who have been. Some like to stay at the all-inclusive resorts- the most popular one there being Club Med while I have also heard good things about the Ocean Blue Golf and Beach Resort.

Friends have really enjoyed it and said it was great for their kids (aged 6-14). Don't forget the kiddie passports! You'll need them, and if you plan on stepping off the resort premises, you might want to brush up on your Spanish....http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11142626.post-33407413362142308542009-08-30T16:59:00.000-04:002009-11-12T15:51:29.099-05:00You Can't Take it with YouWell, OK, maybe that's a misleading title for this post, because you can take it with you, but its going to be a huge hassle! That goes for car seats, full sized strollers, cribs and play yards. Why take it when you can just pick it up on the other end?

TRAVEL TIP:
Rent the larger items you will likely need for baby, including all of the above and much more. Baby gear and toy rental companies, like those below, are a huge success, because they're such a convenience. The costs range from item to item and location to location, naturally. Still, the last time I price checked (recently) you could get items like a car seat for just $6 per day.
Why?
The rules of travel have changed drastically since 9/11 and baggage handlers must be able to inspect any suspicious bags (locked equals suspicious, according to the TSA representative I spoke with).

So what can you do? Most airport shops and travel retailers now sell TSA sanctioned locks for your bags. These locks can only be opened by you, the bag’s owner, or with a master key in possession of official TSA agents. And no worries, the TSA Master Key is government issued and cannot be purchased over the counter by thieves....http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11142626.post-43771031435282923362009-07-13T09:38:00.000-04:002009-11-12T16:31:44.707-05:00Vacation Photo Tips
TIP #1.
Try and capture the moment by using a sense of humor. Did you accidentally cut off mom's head in teh photos? Well, if she has a margarita in her hand... that's funny! Remember- family vacation photos serve one purpose- to remind you of great memories.

TIP #2.
Here's a trick I learned while working in TV. The best photos are when light is on the face of the subject, but the problem is that most of us squint when the sun is in our eyes. Try this: close your eyes, and while doing so, stare at the sun for 10 seconds. DO NOT OPEN YOUR EYES DURING THIS TIME!! When the photo is ready to be taken, look away from the sun and into the camera lens. Like magic, you won't squint, since your eyes have now adjusted to the light....http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11142626.post-6017941126075294362009-07-09T16:41:00.000-04:002009-11-12T15:52:09.443-05:00Awww- SNAP!

Here's a tip when carrying your camera on a trip. Put all undeveloped film and cameras with film in your carry-on baggage. Checked baggage screening equipment will damage undeveloped film. If you've gone digital, you'll be OK at the x-rays.

No matter what type of camera you have, if you've invested in a fancy schmancy removable lens, and you are pulled aside for additional screening by TSA, ask them kindly to be careful regarding your lens. I have seen more than one expensive piece of equipment fall onto the hard floor at the airport screening area. Ouch! That's gotta hurt!...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11142626.post-24218077635615743852009-06-14T18:16:00.000-04:002009-11-17T17:52:26.092-05:00Tips from Readers: AnonymousThis one comes to me from "Anonymous" (thank you whoever you are!)

I have had extensive travel experience flying by myself with our son, from when he was two months until today, on several long haul flights. His passport is filled with stamps from all over the world. When he was just a baby I always reserved the bulkhead seat when buying the ticket, checked in early and asked if the flight was full. If not full, I would ask if the staff could switch my seat to a seat with the next seat free (that they could block for me). I would walk with the stroller base and car seat up to the airplane doors, but get only checked the base at the gate, keeping the car seat with me (if I had that extra seat beside me). I found this easier than the bassinet,
as my son could be awake and still comfortable in the seat (as opposed to the bassinet where he did not always like it). It would allow me to have a meal beside him even if he was awake. Also remember that in a bassinet, the baby has to be picked at every take off, landing and turbulence, which can be quite disruptive if you have a child who has trouble falling asleep in a plane (and Murphy's law is always so effective to get a turbulence 15 minutes after he fell asleep!)... A bassinet, when travelling alone, is not so convenient (specially with american flight carriers, as they put it on the floor (Europeans have them hanging on the wall) (but drawback for an older kids as it can be dangerous for a fall). A bassinet on the floor means less foot space for you and the person next too you, which might be embarrassing for your fellow traveller. Also a young baby who is learning to crawl might not be encouraged to sleep if so close to the floor - it was the case for our son. Also remember to buy a car seat "that can fly". There is something written on them, some logo and abbreviation - can't recall what exactly - we had a Graco and it was approved by the international air agency or something similar. Finally, my experience, for long flights, bring more than you need - 2 extra change of baby clothes (pj with foots are the best), wipes,
diapers, jarred food (sometimes airlines might be able to provide - or you might want to ask when booking to get a baby meal some serve it). Also for toddlers, videos (I am not a tv person, but hey that makes such a difference when traveling), books and other games make it easier. when going through security, you will find that some countries, or some states have more friendly staff. it is never simple to go through the security and handle the baby and the luggage and stroller, and I learned that what works in one place does not always work - for example, in some cases, I was asked to discard my 100 ml baby bottles - they only had water not milk, even in the right required amount, but
the staff was not helpful. Other times, I had to prevent the staff from opening all my jarred food - and I had brought lot (no limit on the number of jars, so I was carrying half a dozen as we where heading to a place I was not sure I could find them). Other times, at the opposite, I walked with evian water bottle (larger than the required
min amount) in my diaper bag, as the staff thought it was for the baby (and I had forgotten about it). hoping this helps,

I found it helpful to be prepared for extended wait times due to possible flight delays etc. I brought a thin (easy and small for folding) yet large enough blanket
when I traveled with my twin infants so they would have a clean space to roll around on, play, get some tummy time in and stretch their legs instead of the nasty airport carpeting. I also requested to board last so we had the maximum freedom before the
restrictions of a plane seat...the other way around may be more comfortable for others who may wish to get on first to get settled...either way, airport staff are very willing to accomodate [sic] your needs. I even had the pilot carry one of my babies to baggage claim...he volunteered! I do support, also, a previous poster who wrote of the importance of having a binky or a bottle ready for take-off and landing as it will help the baby's ears resist the pressure...I found a bottle worked better than a binky as it also soothed the tummy with milk. As soon as the plane begins the fast part of the taxi give your baby the binky/bottle and all should be fine :-)
TRAVEL TIP:
When shooting photos on vacation, in addition to the traditional shots of the family in front of famous landmarks, and those landscape shots you swear you're going to frame, but never get around to it, but try taking a few alternative angle shots too. Its fun!

What do I mean? Well, try an other vantage point, like looking straight down a curving stairwell, or up at a beautiful cornice, like this shot shot I took in Annapolis, Maryland. You just might find they become some of your favorite snapshots....http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11142626.post-10413192620305648252009-05-24T12:53:00.000-04:002009-11-12T15:43:30.736-05:00Not Everyone Scowles at the Crying Baby on BoardA mom recently wrote to me and had this to say:
Hi!
I thought I would draw on your wisdom for recommendations in the Caribbean for a family holiday. We're open to all options and have never been anywhere in the Caribbean. We are after a hotel/resort with a pool, nice beach and one/two bedroom suites so we all have some space. We have a nearly 3 year old and an infant. Basically we want somewhere to relax for a week and spend some time together in the sun and there are so many hotels/islands it is a bit overwhelming! We're looking at going in May sometime. Thanks so much.
Happy to help! Keep in mid- you will need a passport for ALL children- infants too, since its out of the US. However, you do not need an infant passport if you stay w/in the US & territories: i.e. US Virgin Island, and Puerto Rico.

Atlantis in the Bahamas has an infant/child program. No charge for babies, crib, or high chair. Be sure to ask for your "Atlantis Baby" kit: it contains an assortment of J&J baby products, plus a storybook for bedtime.

The Disney Cruise Line can be your best friend, with new ships/routes being added each year for the next few years.
Beaches Resorts opened a new property in Turks & Caicos in January of this year. So far, the guest feedback is great. Beaches is exclusive t families. You actually must have children in order to visit this property.
Club Med has a family package & a family resort in the Dominican Republic & Mexico too....http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11142626.post-57723591587962695362009-05-14T12:28:00.000-04:002009-11-13T16:07:58.599-05:00TRAVEL TIP: Flying with BabyTRAVEL TIP:
Carry our baby in a holder (like an Ergo, or Baby Bjorn). Strapping him in will make it easy on you to go through security and on the plane, etc.

Keep in mind though, some airports may make you take the baby out of the carrier to go through the ex-ray machine, but others will let you just walk through....http://www.blogger.com/profile/17399436057078105389noreply@blogger.com
